Kampmann Stadium & Patton Track Dedication Luncheon
The greatest coach and finest athlete in the 92-year history of University High School will be honored in a special ceremony and luncheon on campus on Sunday, May 15, 2016.
Coach Dick Kampmann, now 91 years old, will be honored with the formal dedication of the new school football field and running track as "Kampmann Stadium." His teams won eight L.A. City Championships, easily the most of any coach in Uni history.
Mel Patton, a 1943 Uni graduate, who went on to win two gold medals in track & field the 1948 Olympic Games, will be honored as the new Rekortan running surface will be dedicated as "Patton Track."
The luncheon will be held in the school's South Gym, along Ohio Avenue, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will feature comments from Kampmann himself, from Mel Patton's wife Shirley, sports historian Larry Booth and members of Kampmann teams from his 25 years as Uni's head coach for cross country and track & field.
The giant plaques honoring their achievements will be unveiled at the ceremony.
The event will be catered by Dearmore's BBQ Catering of Ventura, renowned throughout Southern California for its quality 'cue. The luncheon menu will feature barbeque chicken and tri-tip beef, salad and dessert.
Tickets are available at a discounted rate of $45 per person through April 30, and $60 from May 1-10 only. Dress is casual (although you'll want to look good for the inevitable pictures with classmates and friends!)
Parking will be available, on a first-come, first-served basis on the campus at two lots along Barrington Avenue, as well as ample street parking (free on Sundays). The University High School address is 11800 Texas Avenue, Los Angeles, with the South Gym on the southern end of the campus along Ohio Avenue.
