The Boy From Oz
Landmark Musical Theatre is proud to present the Bay area and Western regional premiere of the Tony award-winning hit, The Boy From Oz, based on the life of Australian songwriter and performer Peter Allen.
The show, which won Hugh Jackman a Best Actor in a Musical Tony in 2004 for his portrayal of the energetic Allen, showcases many of the remarkable people in Allen's life, including Judy Garland, who discovered Peter in a Hong Kong nightclub in the mid-1960s, and her daughter Liza Minnelli, to whom he was married for seven years.
Allen's storybook life, from his humble beginnings in the small town of Tenterfield, Australia, to his sold-out concerts at the Copacabana and Carnegie Hall in the 1970s and 1980s, is played out in The Boy From Oz through many of his remarkable songs which he wrote or co-wrote with people like Jeff Barry, Carole Bayer Sager and Burt Bacharach, including Frank Sinatra's anthem You and Me (We Wanted It All), Olivia Newton-John's hit I Honestly Love You, Melissa Manchester's Don't Cry Out Loud, and the wonderful theme from the movie Arthur, The Best That You Can Do, which won Allen and his collaborators the Academy Award for Best Song in 1981.
Meet the Cast
Dan Seda, a former member of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, will create the role of Allen for the San Francisco stage. Seda, who hails from North Carolina by way of New York City, is appearing in his first major production on the West Coast, along with noted local actor and chanteuse Connie Champagne who is featured as Judy Garland. Champagne has been applauded by the New York Times, which said her performance as Garland in a previous production Christmas At The Crawfords was "a subtle masterpiece of parody and homage".
Kat Robichaud, who competed through the third live playoff round of 2013's The Voice, will portray the youthful Liza Minnelli as she falls in love with Allen while becoming an international star through her roles on Broadway, television and her Academy Award-winning performance as Sally Bowles in 1972's Cabaret. Amy Meyers is featured as Allen's charming and protective mother, Marion Woolnough.
Ivan Hardin plays Allen's long-time lover, Texas fashion model and businessman Greg Connell, who with the help of famous New York agent Dee Anthony, played by Keith Nielsen, shepherds Allen's career to stratospheric heights, including his flamboyant performances with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. Brian FitzMaurice will appear as Dick Woolnough, Allen's abusive alcoholic father.
Two delightful young 11-year old tap-dancers, Daniel Kaukonen and Dylan Palmer, will portray Allen as a young boy on alternate nights. Rounding out the show's ensemble will be Davin Coffey, Lisa Darter, Janine Hartmann, AeJay Mitchell, Garrick Sather, Joella Wolnick and Bessie Zolno.

Meet the Production Team
The Boy From Oz is directed by Jon Rosen who most recently directed Landmark's inaugural production of Tomfoolery in San Francisco last summer. He is joined by Bay area choreographer Kimberly Krol, who will be directing and choreographing Coastal Rep's summer production of Big The Musical, and acclaimed San Francisco-based music director Tammy Hall, who just completed music direction and piano for Cinnabar Theater's production of Mahalia Jackson: Just Like Me. Richard Gutierrez, who was recently seen on the San Francisco stage in The Theater of Others' production of Hamlet, is Production Manager.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The Great Star theater itself is accessible for wheelchair seating. However, the restrooms are NOT accessible at this time as both mens' and womens' restrooms are downstairs with no elevator. We apologize for this inconvenience.
