David Barsamian will be speaking at First Unitarian Church/Sanctuary in Portland, Oregon on Friday, May 13th as a benefit for KBOO Community Radio (www.kboo.fm). Founded in 1968, KBOO is one of the longest running independent, volunteer-run community radio stations in the country. All proceeds from this show will go to support KBOO Community Radio.
David Barsamian is one of America's most tireless and wide-ranging investigative journalists. He has altered the independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio show Alternative Radio - now in its 30th year - and his books with Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Richard Wolff, Arundhati Roy and Edward Said. His latest book of interviews with Noam Chomsky is Power Systems. His best-selling books with Chomsky have been translated into many languages. He lectures on world affairs, imperialism, capitalism, propaganda, the media, the economic crisis and global rebellions.
David will be speaking on one of the most critical issues we are facing, nothing short of saving the very planet that sustains us. Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know. Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about. Those words of warning were written in 1992 by some 1,700 scientists including more than 100 Nobel laureates. Here we are, more than two decades later still talking, still drilling and doing very little to protect our precious planet from an economic system that prioritizes profits over the well-being of Earth.
He is a winner of the Media Education Award, the ACLU's Upton Sinclair Award for independent journalism, and the Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. The Institute for Alternative Journalism named him one of its Top Ten Media Heroes. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center. He has collaborated with the world-renowned Kronos Quartet in events in New York, London, Vienna and elsewhere.
