Atwood's 10th Anniversary feat. Vapors Of Morphine, Mr. Airplane Man, Twinemen
Atwood's Tavern is turning 10 so we're throwing a week long party with some of our favorite musicians.
The 90s band Morphine pioneered a new type of music Low Rock featuring the unusual yet seductive lineup of baritone sax, 2-string slide bass and drums. Morphine burned bright and fast but was snuffed out before its time when leader Mark Sandman passed away in 1999. From its ashes have risen Vapors of Morphine.
Vapors of Morphine honors the progressive legacy of its predecessor. Original Morphine members Dana Colley (baritone sax) and Jerome Deupree (drums) are joined by transplanted New Orleans slide guitarist Jeremy Lyons. They create dreamy soundscapes, applying inventive arrangement to the unique instrumentation of electric baritone saxophone (evocative of Jimi Hendrix guitar), the Sandman-style 2string slide bass (sometimes electric bouzouki or guitar) and mad jazz-rock drums. Morphine songs are performed alongside psychedelic renditions of West African tunes, noise rock, originals and obscure covers. And it all fits together. Vapors of Morphine leave audiences from Boston to Brazil, New Orleans to the Netherlands wanting more.
Mr. Airplane Man is Margaret on guitar and Tara on drums. We are a mishmash of deep love for Mississppi hill country blues, Memphis weirdo rocknroll, drony VU and Stooges, and Boston (our hometown) garage beat and pop wonderment...Sympathy for the Record Industry put out 3 records of ours in the 00's. We self released an ep we recorded with Mark Sandman of Morphine in 1999 (recently re-released by Moi J'Connais records). After about a 10 year break we are so excited to play music together again!!!
Twinemen is an alternative rock band based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA created by former members of the bands Morphine and Face to Face. The group includes Dana Colley (saxophone / vocals), Billy Conway (percussion / vocals / sometimes acoustic guitar), Jeremy Moses Curtis (bass) and Laurie Sargent (lead singer / lead guitar). Twinemen's music includes a mix of jazz, blues, acid rock, and lounge.
Twinemen chose their name as an homage to Morphine's late leader Mark Sandman and his The Twinemen comic series. The Twinemen depicted three anthropomorphic balls of twine who play together in a band. Twinemen currently records in their Cambridge-based Hi-n-Dry Studios.
