The Hooping Life's NYC Premiere!
THE HOOPING LIFE, a feature length documentary that profiles the lives of eight hula hoop artists, along with a celebrity guest appearance by basketball icon Shaquille O'Neal, is set to premiere at the Broad Street Ballroom (41 Broad Street New York, NY ) on July 15 at 2:15 p.m. Hosted by The Hoop Movement, a Brooklyn based company that specializes in hula hoop fitness classes, the event promises live performance art with professional hula hoopers and a hoop dance party to follow the screening.
"You will see masters of the hula hoop like you've never seen before," said Shaquille O'Neal. "The sensation is back!"
In the making for more than six years, THE HOOPING LIFE travels from South Africa to South Central and showcases the rise of an underground cultural phenomenon now known as modern day hoop dance. Individual stories of transformation (NYC's own Groovehoops is highlighted) touch on subjects ranging from suicidal depression to entrepreneurship, transforming a mere kids' toy into a profound spiritual practice and fitness craze.
Much like the rise of break dancing and skateboarding, the modern day hula hooping subculture gives kids a chance to be kids and keeps them out of trouble. Hoop dancers profiled in the film practice meditation with the hoop to lift depression and fire hooping to heal sexual trauma. Whether it is Karis, a gender bending performer who brings hooping to the runway, or HoopGirl who spearheads a fitness trend, each hooper risks it all to make a life they are passionate about. The late American radio and TV personality Art Linkletter makes an appearance in THE HOOPING LIFE, and the documentary also features an original soundtrack by Basement Jaxx.
