Ensemble Origo - Musical Grammar in Seventeenth-Century Cracow and Kyiv: Madrigals and Motets of Eastern Europe
Mykola Dyletsky (fl. 1675-ca. 1681) was a theorist and composer active in Kyiv, Vilnius, St. Petersburg, and Moscow; one source names him as "a well-known master at the tsar's court." His Grammatika musikiyskago peniya (A grammar of musical singing) survives in several versions, one of which is in Ukrainian, and a fellow theorist claimed he was "a resident of Kyiv." His musical activities in the Polish-Lithuanian city of Vilnius took place at the intersection of Catholic, Uniate, and Orthodox insitutions there, and it is in this spirit that we perform his selections from his four-voice Liturgy alongside liturgical works and madrigals from the Polish court as well as German motets. Diletsky's music suggests along with the scant documentary evidence that he was immersed equally in Western and Eastern styles of worship and music. The concert will be preceded by a thirty-minute talk at 2 pm.
