GROOVERIDER

DJ Grooverider is an individual who is undoubtedly synonymous with the birth, growth and rise of Drum&Bassand UK Dance Music in general. Having been a pioneer within the industry for well over 20 years he has participated and supervised the evolution of the genre globally and is regarded by his peers and fans as The Godfather of Drum&Bass. His show on BBC Radio1 ran for 14 years(1998 - 2012, presented in conjunction with Fabio) and attracted a devoted audience worldwide, while being regarded as the top Drum&Bass show for its entire broadcast span.
Although Grooverider is known primarily as a DJ and radio presenter, he was also a recording artist under his artist name, and the 'Codename John' moniker. As a recording artist, Grooverider has released one full album, Mysteries of Funk (Sony 1998), produced in conjunction with Optical, and has done a number of singles and remixes including his reworkings of Johnny L's "Piper" plus Roni Size/Reprazent's "Share The Fall. His record label, Prototype Recordings, was distributed by SONY UK and became well known for releasing some of the genres biggest names including Dillinja, Drumrsound & Bassline Smith, Ed Rush & Optical, and Photek.
Being associated almost exclusively with *Dance Music,* Grooverider drew his influence from Reggae, Hip Hop, R&B, Funk, Disco and other urban music styles prior to the birth of Drum&Bass. When he describes his journey into Drum&Bass he recounts: I started cruising to House, then Hardcore. Now its Drum&Bass but House is what I know inside out. Thats what I grew up with, my first love. I know everything about it. Drum&Bass is something we formulated out of House. His musical journey gains unrivaled praise and recognition for his efforts and his contributions which have been critical in establishing UK Urban music as we know it today.
This acclaim and notoriety is a far cry from the beginning days of Dance Music and his time on sound systems and a pirate radio station. Grooverider is quick to admit his first love is as a DJ: Ill always be a DJ first. I used to DJ on a sound system years ago then I got onto a radio station. It was called Phase 1 I was playing acid house every Sunday morning, like, 8 til 10 in the morning. Sometimes we would start 3 am and go on til the next day.
Grooverider linked up with Fabio early on when the owner of the Pirate Radio station started booking them together for his after hours club. Fabio, (who is also considered a forefather of the genre), worked with Grooverider throughout the years. Their collaborations lead to several world tours, and headlining some of the biggest Drum&Bass shows on the planet.
In closing, Grooverider has had a profound influence on UK and world dance music over two decades: successfully assuming both roles of being a pioneering DJ and Producer. He has been the recipient of countless underground and global dance awards, but perhaps one of his most reputed achievements was the MOBO best DJ award. One of the UK's finest DJ/Producers and co-founder of Formation Records, now celebrating its 25 year Anniversary making it the longest running Drum&Bass label on the planet. DJ SS aka Leroy Small is an original breakbeat pioneer who has made an immense contribution to today's drum & bass sound.
When the hardcore scene exploded SS was there and hasn't looked back. He and his partner Eidris started promoting their own parties called Total Kaos every Friday in their hometown of Leicester. They also put on one of the first large indoor parties at Donnington Park in the summer of 91. It was an amazing success and 6000 people danced till dawn.
Born and bred in Leicester and a self-taught scratch DJ; SS found fame scratching his way through the era and break-dancing the streets of Leicester. He progressed onto the rave scene and was one of the first on the worldwide scene to DJ self-produced tracks mastered to high standards.
DJ SS has an enormous list of tracks and used various aliases. Over the years hes had countless releases on his label Formation Records alongside many heavy hitters such as Carl Cox, Grooverider, Shy FX, Ray Keith, Bryan Gee, Frost, Roni Size, Krust, Kenny Ken, Ratty, Matrix, John B, Mickey Finn, Twisted Individual and Distorted Minds.
His release 'The Psycho E.P', 'Rhythm For Reasons', 'Breakbeat Pressure', the Drum & Bass anthem 'Black', and highlight ' Lighter' (which was Formation Records best seller, reaching the number 1 spot in the Music Week dance chart), still remains incredibly popular.
In between this huge success he has also been the driving force behind some of the finest talent in the scene, most recently Twisted Individual, who had made a huge impact on the scene with releases on Formation Records and sister labels Reformed and New Identity, with debut album Tooled Up. Convincing Zen, (an old friend of Twisted Individual), to join the Formation team after several releases on 5HQ Recordings; the last couple of years has seen his debut appearance on Formation Records with Minefield as part of the 100th release alongside sister labels Reformed and New Identity. Adding to the successful list of a&r projects, DJSS is also responsible for launching the careers of successful artists like John B, Greenlaw, and Multi Platinum selling artists Neroand is continuing on that path bringing on new blood.
Fast forward to 2015 and we saw Formation events team up with the UKs premier event company: Outbreak Festival, to host Formation & World of Drum&Bass Arenas at their massive event. Simultaneously DJSS has built his World of Drum&Bass brand to become the biggest Drum&Bass events around the globe with Russia averaging over 4-6,000 people per show.
As the 25 years of Formation arrives, DJ SS enters a new chapter launching his next concept, Bass Disciples. This Gospel&Bass movement will bridge the gap of church and Bass music collide on a path of worship through a genuine music platform.

D&B would not be the same without Drumsound & Bassline Smith (aka Andy Wright, Benjamin Wiggett and Simon Bassline Smith). Together the trio have body-slammed dancefloors from Derby to Durban and entrenched themselves as three of the finest drumnbass tastemakers on the planet courtesy of the blue chip label Technique Recordings an imprint that celebrated 10 years of killer dancefloor joints in 2009.
The magic has been bubbling ever since Wright and Wiggett met Bassline Smith at one of Derbys mentalist Technique club nights in the summer of 1998. The Drumsound pair had been crafting beats for a year, having originally started as a crew of six artists, while Bassline Smith had carved out a reputation as one of D&Bs most influential players, with a career stretching back to the early 80s.
As a trio, they enjoy an impressive arsenal of diversity thats ensured their place atop the D&B scene for over a decade. A peep through Wrights background and youll find hes a classically trained musician with a strong background in indie rock an ideal platform for harnessing the energetic groove that makes Drumsound & Smiths productions slide over the dancefloor. His Drumsound compadre Wigget has been a diehard D&B head since the womb, while also tipping his hat to his Jamaican roots. Veteran Bassline Smith has been a funk and soul connoisseur for over 25 years. As Drumsound & Bassline Smith theyve enjoyed a firestarting musical synergy thats played a pivotal role in taking drumnbass to the next level and carved out a patented Technique sound in the process. In 1998, they were asked to complete a CD of samples for the respected Loopmasters Series laying testament to their original approach to beat construction.
From the music industrys finest tastemakers, to the die-hard junglists populating clubs and festivals each weekend, one thing rings out loud and clear; no one can get enough of Drumsound & Bassline Smiths floor-burning sound.
In 2004 their Odyssey banger was judged Mixmags 10th best all-round dance anthem of the year and hit no.1 on the UK charts. The trio have also issued a string of stormers on the most respected imprints in D&B, dropping cuts on LTJ Bukems Good Looking Records, Bryan Gs V Recordings and Grooveriders seminal Prototype Records.
Drumsound & Bassline Smith are also in hot demand from the most respected heads at Radio One and 1Xtra and enjoy regular flogging on the airwaves from Fabio & Grooverider, Zane Lowe, Mista Jam, Annie Nightingale and Annie Mac. The trio are one of the few set of artists to complete multiple mixes for the famed Radio One, with a whisper of a request to complete a coveted Essential Mix in 2010. We love them and have been supporting them since day one, Mac tells.
As their popularity begins to steamroll, so do the requests. Drumsound & Smith have issued re-rubs of VV Browns Leave at the request of Warner/Universal and Fugative - Supafly (Drumsound & Bassline Smith Remix) for Ministry of Sound. Radio Ones Annie Mac also personally requested the crew complete a remix of Chipmunks no.1 anthem Oopsy Daisy for her Mash Hitz segment. They also achieved an unlikely feat when they made the Eastenders theme dope, completing a re-rub for the E20 Music Competition set up by the BBC.
No surprise that demand has seen the guys independently tour all corners of the globe setting the standard across America, Canada, Australia, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Iceland, Spain, Holland, Sweden, Ireland, Czech Republic, Brazil, Poland, Switzerland, Uruguay, Norway and Italy. Further to this, theyve represented at UK parties Fabric Live, Tranz-mission, Detonate, Slamming Vinyl, One Nation and Movement.
In 2009, Drumsound & Bassline Smith reached a milestone when their Technique Recordings imprint hit its 10 year anniversary of releases. With a philosophy firmly focussed on issuing tunes to satisfy the next generation of music lovers, the label celebrated its birthday with the critically acclaimed 10 Years Of Technique LP which included the hits Can You Feel It Clap Your Hands and Law Of The Jungle and reached no.1 on the BBC Radio One and 1xtra charts. Other featured remixes were with DJ Freshs Louder, Freaks Close and Mobys After, which dropped in October 2011. With Utah Saints vs Drumsound & Bassline Smith's 'What Can You Do For Me' in 2012, and a list that continues to dateDrumsound & Bassline Smith have unstoppable momentum.

After broad exposure to Jazz, Salsa, and R&B growing up, Donahue Holland aka Definition: Positive learned to appreciate the deeper side of some of these genres, and how it affects and drives emotion. His passion for music and mixing exploded in the Los Angeles rave scene during the mid 90s, nurturing this new love for electronic music. Once experiencing Drum and Bass, he shifted gears permanently; realizing that this style was the missing part of his 'musical soul.
Former resident DJ at Nova Express Cafe, Futurebound Radio, LA, and LiquidBass.net, Def Pos became an LA staple representing these unique sounds. Since relocating to Salem, guest appearances have included Bassdrive, Signal Flow Radio LA, DnBTV and countless live performances all around Oregon with some heavy-hitters such as the Bachelors of Science, Artificial Intelligence, Ben Soundscape, ASIDES, Calculon, MC Question Mark, and DJ MARKY.
