Put-in- Day Day Sail on NIAGARA
Sail on the U.S. Brig NIAGARA, on a Four-hour itinerary departing from Put-in Bay, OH. Niagara will be docked at Fox's Dock, 239 Bayview Avenue, Put-in-Bay, OH 43456.
Few experiences are more rare and majestic than the opportunity to witness first-hand a tall ship under full sail.
The US Brig Niagara is a faithful reconstruction of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's victorious relief flagship during the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. In the modern age, she operates as a US coast Guard certified Sailing School Vessel (SSV.) Through Niagara's various sailing programs, members of the general public can experience the golden age of sail in an immersive environment.
Public Sails
Niagara is owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and administered and operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with the assistance of the Flagship Niagara League, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. She acts as a sailing ambassador and representative of the Commonwealth.
Niagara is inspected by the United States Coast Guard as a Sailing School Vessel (SSV.) Sailing School Vessels may charge tuition for participation in education programs, but are prohibited from carrying passengers for hire. SSVs are built and certified to different regulations for design, construction, and safety standards than passenger vessels.
Sailing School Vessel Trainees (unlike passengers) learn a sailing related curriculum and are expected to be responsible and active participants in the sailing of the vessel. While the ship, completed in 1990, has modern auxiliary power, navigation, and life-saving equipment, the working of the ship and the living conditions onboard are authentic.
