A Talk with Chagdud Khadro
Death is a brilliant mirror that offers us discernment about lifes priorities and a deep appreciation of the power of mind. But, we must prepare, both in ordinary ways and spiritually. Without preparation, ourend-of-life transitions can be overwhelmingly confusing and painful--for the dying person, for caregivers, and for familyandfriends.Preparation is urgent, because the time of death remains uncertain.
During her thirty years as an authorized Buddhist teacher, Chagdud Khadro has focused primarily on the Tibetan Buddhist meditation methods that enable one to sustain deep, meaningful attention to minds continuity despite the disintegration of the dying body. With practice, meditation can be maintained after death and the mind can be directed toward an auspicious rebirth. Buddhist masters regard death as a superb opportunity to find liberation from ordinary cycles of existence.
Those who have attended in Khadros retreats and public talks come from many countries and cultures, and they have offered a wealth of insightful stories and suggestions about palliative care. A discussion of end-of-life care directives is part of her teachings.
Chagdud Khadro became a student of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche in 1978. Since Rinpoches death in 2002, Khadro serves as the spiritual director of the Chagdud Gonpa centers in Latin America. She lives in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where she teaches andwrites.
