"Ti-Jean and His Brothers"
This folk tale, written by Derek Wolcott, tells the story of three brothers who, with their mother, live in poverty in a rain forest in the West Indies. One day, the family strikes a deal with the devil: if they can outwit him and make him experience anger, he will give them all they need. If not, he will have the brothers for dinner. Although the family prays to God daily, they make the deal. As each of the brothers attempts to beat the devil through his own skill, Ti-Jean makes use of what God has surrounded him with: nature and his mother's wisdom.
