THE WATAH THEATRE presents Audre Lorde Works-In-Progress Festival
The Audre Lorde Works-In-Progress Festival, named in honour of self-described "black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet," African-Caribbean-American r/evolutionary Audre Lorde. The Watah Theatre's two week-long exploration of trans-disciplinary works of art. Featuring 26 artists-in-residence, the festival is curated by Watah's Artistic Director, d'bi.young anitafrika.

While in treatment Penelope befriends a cocky Irish teen, and the two of them do what they can to sustain their sobriety. Together they work on ending Penelope's five hundred year old family curse; a curse that is driving her mad, leaving her to question what is real and what is not.
Addicted boldly and humorously asks "What are you addicted to?"
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Raven Dauda has been a professional storyteller for over twenty years. Notable productions include: Heroes Reborn, Orphan Black, Intimate Apparel, and Da Kink in My Hair. Raven has received Dora Awards for The Penelopiad, and Miss Julie: Freedom Summer, and Dora Nominations for Doubt: A Parable and The Minotaur.

Oughtism, follows the life of Tariq, a nonverbal autistic savant. The play explores the hardships families endure, especially living with autism while poor; with particular emphasis on how siblings of autism experience embarrassment, frustration and hopelessness.
The play challenges the scientific pursuit to find a cure for autism. John White is the spokesperson for Golden Mind, an innovative biotechnological centre which is focused on aiding parents choose their child's traits. Golden Mind presents to the public a prenatal cure for autism. When Leah, Reign's sister starts working at Golden Mind, Reign considers undergoing the autism-extermination procedure. Ultimately, Oughtism urges audiences to question their own humanity.
ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Faduma Mohamed is a spoken word poet and storyteller who started writing at the age of eight and performing at the age of thirteen. She attends the University of Toronto studying English and Women and Gender Studies. She has completed her internship as an editorial writer with Urbanology Magazine. She is also one of the organizers of R.I.S.E Edutainment. Above all, she's an advocate for autism and believes in the power of envisioning dreams into life

BaKari I. Lindsay was born on the sunny isle of Trinidad, West Indies. Perfecting his crafts for the past 25 years, BaKari is a dancer, choreographer, researcher, singer, musician, costume designer/maker and father. He studied at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The School of Toronto Dance Theatre on scholarship and with various teachers from the Caribbean and the African Continent, and holds a Masters Degree in Dance Ethnology, and Bachelors of Education degree from York University. Bakari developed a physical language for training in West African and Diasporic African dance culture entitled A-Feeree - The Physical Language. BaKari is the co-founder of COBA (Collective Of Black Artists).

Lillian Allen is a Creative Writing Professor at the Ontario College of Art & Design University in Toronto Canada. Allen emerged from the grassroots in the seventies to become a leading influential figure on the Canadian cultural landscape. She is an award winning and internationally renowned poet. As one of its lead originator and innovators, she has specialized in the writing and performing of dub poetry, a new genre of English Literature which is a highly politicized form of poetry preferring a black aesthetic and specific cultural codification. Dub poetry is a poetic form, which stylizes vernacular language, the emotive quality and inherent musicality of words and is sometimes set to music. It is considered a literary godmother of rap, hip-hop and spoken word poetry.
