Event

Andy Irvine
When Andy arrived at the Burren last time he played a few years ago, he had just arrived from Ireland but into Newark and driven thru traffic to Davis Square.  I was nervous that this veteran would be exhausted.  Ha!!!  It was one of the best concerts I ever heard him give!   What history!  What soul! What impact! What dedication to his art!

It was one of the most anticipated concerts in the series to that date and it exceeded expectations.  Andy Irvine is truly an icon of traditional and now, contemporary Irish music.  As a member of Sweeny's Men, then Planxty, and most recently Patrick Street, his ensemble playing has created its own unique style of approach to the music. As a solo artist, his original songs have simply become part of the tradition, and his collaborations with Paul Brady, and Dick Gaughan are the recordings of legend.

Take a listen to this rendition of his hero Woody Guthrie's aptly named, Never Tire of the Road.

So glad Andy hasn't tired of the road, is energised by it, and coming back to us in Boston.

The Burren Backroom series is now well established as one of the most sought-after boutique series of trad presentation in the world.  It has already created already dozens of memorable, intimate, informal presentations held in a truly atmospheric space which was founded by well-known traditional musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello in Davis Square, Somerville, Massachusetts.

Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings feature core performers from many aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music.  As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.

Tickets prices vary, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members.  If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.

Seating is VERY limited and these events have been selling out, so get your tickets today!
