Beneath the Stories We Wear
It doesn't fit...it's getting tighter. It prevents you from looking up. I've always admired a woman who can wear a hat. I am not that woman, I am a kayak. I am an impostor in a hat.
for change dance collective is proud to present its second Home Season on February 27 & 28, 2016. "Beneath the Stories We Wear" is an intimate look at the formation of social identity, which questions the narratives we construct about others and about ourselves. How do we know who we are beyond the adornments of daily life? Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie challenges us to interrogate the concept of the "single story" which reduces a person or group down to one definitive identity. Whether that story is one we tell ourselves or a narrative that we've been conditioned to accept, being tied to it removes any hope, any chance, any possibility of change. By mining our personal histories for answers and uncovering more questions, fcdc explores how we can challenge the single story, peel back the layers of artifice, and re-embrace the multiplicity of our human experiences.
Featuring original music composed by Joseph M. Colombo and Jesse C. Dienner.
After the Saturday, February 27 show we will be having a small reception with snacks, drinks, and live music. We hope you can join us!
