the little match girl passion
"the little match girl passion" is FST's most technically demanding work ever, incorporating multiple video projections of original film created by Derek Kimball, intricate puppetry, masked dance in the Noh style, and four singers (who also play the percussion instruments called for in the score) under the direction of renowned vocalist Andrea Goodman. It also marks FST's return to the creation of original work for adult audiences, and the resumption of national and international touring.
With "the little match girl passion," FST explores the integration of video projection and live performance, blurring the lines between what the senses interpret as real and ephemeral. Aligned with the idea of using puppets to bridge extremes is the notion of boundary: between animate and inanimate, heaven and earth. The projection surfaces mark one such boundary, and the elements projected will be used to both define and disrupt that boundary. Video will also be used to amplify moments of the performance by projecting intensely close-up views of puppet action, exploring the paradoxical natures of film and puppetry, where notions of "real" are always unstable.
