Tony McManus

Celebrating the recent release of his CD with Italian guitarist Beppe Gambetta, 'Round Trip,' Tony McManus makes an always welcome return to our area. McManus has been been hailed by legendary English guitarist John Renbourn as 'the best Celtic guitarist in the world' and by BBC Scotland as 'the finest guitarist Scotland has ever produced.'

To find a unique voice on so ubiquitous an instrument as the acoustic guitar is quite an achievement but to do so within a centuries old idiom where the instrument has no real history is truly remarkable. From early childhood Tony's twin obsessions of traditional music and the guitar have combined to produce a startlingly original approach to this ancient art where the complex ornamentation normally associated with the fiddle and pipes is transferred in a manner that preserves the integrity and the emotional impact of the music.

McManus' 20-year career has seen him appear on over 60 albums and perform all over the world. Among his notable CDs are a duo recording with fiddler Alasdair Fraser and his solo releases 'Ceol More' and 'The Maker's Mark,' both of which were named by Acoustic Guitar magazine to their list of 'Essential Recordings of the Past Two Decades.'
