Dig This Samba!

Jazz flutist Ali Ryerson joins the Bert Dalton Brazil Project, along with special guest guitarist Phill Fest to celebrate the infectious sambas of Brazilian born pianist Manfredo Fest.
"Dig This Samba" will be presented Friday, Dec. 4, at 7:30pm at the Albuquerque Center For Spiritual Living, 2801 Louisiana; on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7:30pm at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, 463 Paseo de Peralta, Santa Fe; and on Sunday, Dec. 6, at 7:30pm at the Fox Recital Hall on the campus of University of Texas at El Paso. The El Paso concert will be recorded for a 2016 CD release.
The Brazil Project consists of Bert Dalton on piano, Rob "Milo" Jaramillo on bass, vocalist Patty Stephens, John Bartlit on drums, and Frank Leto on percussion. Their premier self-titled recording won the World Music category in the New Mexico Music Awards. Dalton's work includes over a dozen recordings with the Bert Dalton Trio, Chicago Jazz Exchange, Dalton Brothers Trio, Yoboso, and the Brazil Project. He has performed with Herbie Mann, Regina Carter, Bud Shank, & Anita O'Day, and has recorded with John Clayton and Jeff Hamilton.
Ali Ryerson, one of the most exciting and versatile flutists on the scene today, consistently ranks high among the top jazz flutists in the Downbeat Jazz Poll. Having released nearly two-dozen recordings on major jazz labels, Ryerson has recorded and/or performed with jazz greats such as Kenny Barron, Hubert Laws, Mike Mainieri, Joe Beck, Stephane Grappelli, Red Rodney, Frank Wess, Laurindo Almeida, Art Farmer, and Roy Haynes. Ali has toured the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia and Africa, performing in both major jazz festivals such as the Monterey Jazz Festival, JVC in NY, Guinness Festival in Scotland, Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, and major venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in D.C., the Blue Note in both NYC and Japan, and Ronnie Scott's in London.
Guitarist Phill Fest, son of Manfredo and composer/educator Lillian Fest, records and performs in Miami with frequent trips to Brazil. His current CD, "That's What She Says," is currently charting at #23 on the Jazz Album Charts. His previous release, "Projeto B.F.C." (Brazil Florida Connection) reached #18.
Manfredo Irmin Fest was born in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil in 1936, son of a German concert pianist. He was classically trained, but at 17 became interested in the jazz of George Shearing and Bill Evans. Although he was blind, he learned to read music in Braille. In college he gained steady work playing in São Paolo and found himself at the center of the newly-invented bossa nova movement. He recorded four albums for the RGE label which have become Bossa Nova piano jazz trio classics.
In the 1967 he moved to the US and worked with Sergio Mendes. He was musical director of the Bossa Rio Sextet which recorded three albums for A & M Records. During the 1970's, he released three albums including the classis and critically acclaimed "Brazilian Dorian Dream" which included the compositions "Brazilian Dorian Dream," "Facing East," and "That's What She Says."
His compositions, including "Seresta (Serenade)" and "Brazilian Dorian Dream," have been recorded by George Shearing, Paquito Di Rivera, Buddy DeFranco and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
"I have been inspired by Manfredo's music since I first heard him in the late 1970's," said Bert Dalton of the Brazil Project. "His wonderful melodies, his natural use of Brazilian rhythms and harmonies, and flawless piano technique set him apart as one of the most important Brazilian jazz pianists. While he never enjoyed the wide-spread recognition he richly deserved, he has many loyal fans. Through these concerts, we hope to introduce this music to a wider audience."
