Hoboken Three Years After Sandy: Looking Back and Looking Ahead
As the 3rd Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy approaches, many people are wondering "what are we doing?" to prevent a similar disaster. During the storm in 2012, almost 500 million gallons of sea, river water, and even raw sewage flooded approximately 80% of this mile square city. The hospital was evacuated, apartment buildings became islands, schools and businesses were closed. The most vulnerable residents and neighbors were suddenly without water, without electricity, without food, without a safe place to just close their eyes. Those who needed medicine and medical care could not get it. More than 50,000 residents were affected in some way.
This Sunday, please join local residents and experts working on the Rebuild By Design Flood protection project for an informative tour on what happened three years ago and what is happening now to help prevent another disaster. Speakers include Stevens Institute of Technology, North Hudson Sewerage Authority, the Hoboken Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.), the Jubilee Center, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental protection. A Bus Tour (reservations required) as well as Self-Guided Walking Tour (no reservation needed) will be available.
The Bus Tour is from 1:30 to 3pm on Sunday October 25, 2015. Reservations are required. Members of the Media or all other inquiries please contact the organizer for more details.
