The Night Watch: music for Vespers
The concert balances ancient music for the evening service of Vespers with modern music inspired by a similar aesthetic. The program mainly consists of a Vespers service, found anonymously in an early sixteenth-century manuscript from the north German city of Wittenberg. The service was transcribed by Schola Antiqua's Artistic Director, Michael Alan Anderson, a music historian at the Eastman School of Music. The Vespers service consists of five psalms, a hymn, and a Magnificat, as was customary. A sonorous song for the night by south-German composer Josef Rheinberger and a stunning Magnificat by living Estonian composer Arvo Pärt form beautiful counterpoint to the centuries-old alternation of chant and choral music (polyphony) witnessed in the Wittenberg source.
