The Musicals
Celebrating their 50th year - Studio 58 is a professional theatre training school in Vancouver, British Columbia. A part of Langara College's Theatre Arts Program, the school offers a three-year program for acting students and a two-year program for production students.
For one night only we are celebrating The Musicals that have been presented over the last 50 years at Studio 58 and also raising money for two very special musical theatre awards.
An evening of songs + stories performed from a selection of the musicals presented at Studio 58 by alumni + special guests PLUS Birthday Cake!
Pay What You Can - or what you will - money raised is to benefit the Studio 58 Lloyd Nicholson Memorial Scholarship + the financial awards given out at the annual OVATION! Awards presented by APPLAUSE! Musicals Society.
ABOUT LLOYD NICHOLSON AND THE MEMORIAL AWARD
Kathryn Shaw, Artistic Director for Studio 58, the professional theatre training program at Langara College, knew Lloyd for many years: "It is with great sadness that Studio 58 mourns the passing of instructor Lloyd Nicholson. Lloyd was an integral part of Studio 58. His passion for musical theatre was an inspiration to our students for over 25 years. Besides teaching the students how to sing a song in front of a crowd with pleasure and aplomb, he also musically directed many of our productions. An expert in the field of musical theatre, he brought a richness and depth to his artistry which he passed on to the students. Lloyd never settled for anything but the very best from the students and as a result he helped them through many challenges and encouraged them to set the bar high when they entered the professional world. His creativity, musicianship and dedication will be sorely missed by Studio 58 and the Vancouver theatre community. He was one of a kind!"
In addition to serving as Musical Director for many Studio 58 productions, including Bye Bye Birdie, The Boyfriend, Guys and Dolls and Cabaret, Mr. Nicholson was Artistic Director of Royal City Musical Theatre and musically directed for many theatres across Canada.
The scholarship is given to a Studio 58 student who demonstrates outstanding musical ability.
ABOUT THE OVATION AWARDS
The annual community celebration of Musical Theatre in the Lower Mainland, the OVATION! Awards continue to build community spirit and promote local musical theatre companies & productions while also celebrating the past year's outstanding musicals & performances. Awards given to individuals are all financial.
