"This was one of the finest moments of theatre I have experienced all year." Jeff Myhre, NYTheatreGuide
Cheryl King, director of Stage Left Studio, NYC, and longtime LGBTQ advocate, has returned to NYC from her tour of the US, and has re-assembled her team of actors and activists for Gender - A Performance Project. The initial performance on June 29 at the intimate Stage Left Studio featured work by Ms. King and Ashley Lauren Rogers- trans woman, playwright and actor. This reprised version is a 60-minute evening of sketches, monologues and videos exploring how our ideas about gender affect our lives. A gentle tongue-in-cheek attitude prevails throughout, in comedic bits about coming out, PGP's (preferred gender pronouns), workplace and facility discrimination, identity, and the misconceptions regarding life as a transgender/gender non-binary individual. The 10-person cast is diverse- including actors of multiple ethnicities, ages and gender identifications.
"This show is a joy to see. Combining video and live performance, monologues, scenes, poetry, and a lesson in pronouns, this cast gives us their hearts, with humor and straightforward honesty, even when tongues are planted firmly in cheeks" Jamie Rosler, The Public Reviews
Playwrights Cheryl King and Ashley Lauren Rogers created this hour-long show about Gender issues, after Cheryl was awarded a grant for the project by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Originally performed at Stage Left Studio on June 29, 2015 by a cast of 12, this reprise of that show features the original multi-gender identity cast and several new sketches. Featuring actors Cheryl King, Ashley Lauren Rogers, MJ Roche, Keith Mackler, Katie Lawson, Pooya Mohseni, Miyuki Kumamoto, Ericka Hart, KC Weakley, Sabastian Croy and Lisetanne Scherschel.
