The Loving of the Land Concert
The Loving of the Land Concert is an evening filled with music and revelry to support graduate student research in sustainable agriculture and food systems.
The event will feature the Madison group Graminy (www.graminy.net, and description below), as well as a choral group, the Blue Dog Consort- a new group comprised of top singers from Madison's various choral groups, and directed by John Bohman. The music will all be in a hybrid style we call "class-grass" that blends bluegrass and classical traditions. Most of the music will also have an environmental and agricultural theme, including two pieces specially composed for this event.
Before and after the concert, and during intermission, Agroecology students will be available, with research posters, to talk about the program or their research.
We are also planning a silent auction: delicious local grass-fed beef, stays in B&B's on Lake Michigan...
Come take in some of Madison's finest musicians and composers while investing in the next generation of agricultural innovators and food system revolutionizers.
We hope to see you there.
In their own words:
Founded in 2010, Graminy is a new band, based in Madison, Wisconsin. We seek to fuse the classical and grassroots traditions, from Bach to bluegrass, from Copland to Celtic, from Gershwin to native American, from Kodaly to klezmer, and more. Drawing on all these styles, Graminy composes and arranges all its music, which includes lots of quick changes, generous improvisations, and occasional singing. We call our style "class-grass." Our aim is to put more class in grass and more grass in class.
Graminy's music focuses on themes of ecology and place. Our name derives from the botanical name for the grass family, Gramineae, as our music draws on the entire family of grassroots traditions, from all places and ecologies. We also play for dances and other non-concert events under the name Thirsty Roots.
There is always a collective process to our composition. Usually, a member of band brings a new tune and an arrangement to rehearsal, but it fast becomes a de-rangement, as ideas spring into the air. We call it "graminizing" a piece.
