ABOUT THE ARTIST Priyadarsini Govind is one of the foremost Bharatanatyam dancers among the current generation. Trained by two stalwarts, the late Kalaimamani Sri S.K. Rajarathnam Pillai and Padma Bhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, Priyadarsini has imbibed this art form from the best. With her natural aptitude for abhinaya (expressional dance) coupled with her passion and dedication to her art, Priyadarsini has become a flag bearer for Smt. Kalanidhi's padam repertoire. Priyadarsini's nritta, or technical dance, is intense and vigorous. A dancer known for her adherence to tradition, Priyadarsini seamlessly blends new choreography with the traditional, gently redefining the boundaries of the Bharatanatyam repertoire.
Priyadarsini gave her maiden performance Arangetram - in 1974. Since then, in her extensive professional career spanning three decades, Priyadarsini has performed in prestigious festivals and venues all around the world.
FROM THE CRITICS: "Suddenly there comes a performance which opens the mind and heart afresh to the full aesthetic potential of solo classical dance. Priyadarshini's ability to sustain a repose and tranquility in the art form in an unhurried tempo, while bringing out the emotional depths, is all too rare among dancers of the day." -The Hindu
"Revered for her use of abhinaya, or the art of expression, Ms. Govind, who exudes a certain Bollywood glamour, incorporates a presentational style that is full of delicate detail but wholly accessible." Gia Kourlos, The New York Times
"She (Priyadarsini) also makes the whole issue of 'innovation' in the Bharatanatyam technique somewhat passe and inconsequential; she dares to tailor the form to her amazing dancing ability, and gives it the stamp of her individuality-as it always was with the best exponents." - Alessandra Lopez y Raya, PULSE, London, England
