Tessa Souter at Carriage House Concert Series, South Pasadena
w/ Josh Nelson (piano), Dave Robaire (bass) and Dan Schnelle (drums)
"World class. Must-see" Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times
"On this rare trip back to [;California];, the London-born singer is focusing on music from her upcoming album based on her discovery at the age of 30 that her father wasn't a white Spaniard but a black Trinidadian. Whatever material she explores, Souter is a beguiling artist who infuses everything she interprets with voluptuous intelligence and keen emotional insight." (Andrew Gilbert, KQED Arts) "Best of all, she delivers it with a wit and a wink worthy of the toniest joints in town." (Time Out New York) ----------
Born in England, of Trinidadian and English parents, award-winning New York-based vocalist, composer and lyricist, Tessa Souter, imbues a mix of jazz and stunning originals, jazz versions of 70s pop, and contemporary jazz tunes by Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner and Freddie Hubbard, with the soul and passion of flamenco, Indian and Middle Eastern music. Her "truly beautiful voice" (Sirius Radio) and penchant for exploring strikingly beautiful music mostly untouched by other singers has set her apart as "one of the finest and most fearless vocalists to have emerged in recent years." (Boston Globe)
Her most recent album, Beyond the Blue (Venus-Motéma), featuring jazz arrangements of classical gems adorned with her own "exhilaratingly mature lyrics" (Neil Tesser, Chicago Examiner), was picked by the London Times as one of the Top Ten Jazz CDs of 2013. She has performed and/or recorded with, among others, Kenny Werner, Billy Drummond, Akira Tana, Steve Kuhn, Lew Soloff (read her tribute to Lew [;;here];;(http://www.londonjazznews.com/2015/03/rip-lew-soloff-1944-2015-with-tribute.html), which appeared in London Jazz News), Romero Lubambo, Charnett Moffett (she appears on his Spirit of Sound CD), Don Braden and Joel Frahm.
"A unique textural soundscape, far from the usual jazz combo experience." - Ron Netsky, Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival review, June 2015
