H.P Lovecraft Brooklyn Guided Tour with Jane Rose
Date: Saturday, October 10 Time: 3:30 pm Admission: $20 ***Offsite: Meet at Parkside and Ocean Avenue, right outside the Prospect Park Entrance.
Twentieth-century horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft, whose persona and works are closely tied with his native Providence, RI, spent just over two years living in Brooklyn. Beset by a troubled marriage, financial difficulties, and a phobia of New York's immigrant population, Lovecraft produced only a few stories while living in the cityworks reflecting his attitude toward the teeming metropolis. Lovecraft's time in Brooklyn, although difficult, would prove transformative. Upon returning to Providence, H P Lovecraft would immediately produce his most masterful and best-loved works.
In this tour, filmmaker, writer and Lovecraft fan Jane Rose will trace a path from Lovecraft's high hopes at the beginning of his Brooklyn sojourn in Flatbush, to tough times in the area now known as Brooklyn Heights, and artistic renewal beyond. While Lovecraft, an avid walker and antiquarian, roamed New York City and its surroundings widely, this tour will focus specifically on his ties to Brooklyn, exploring his impressions and inspirations along the way.
The tour will take place in two sections, with Part 1 in Flatbush and Part 2 in Brooklyn Heights. Attendees can come to either section, but both are strongly recommended in order to get a full picture of Lovecraft's live while in Brooklyn. Transportation time is allowed between the sections. Admission covers both sections.
Part 1 (Flatbush): 3.30pm. Meet at Parkside and Ocean Avenue, right outside the Prospect Park Entrance. This section will take approximately 1 hour and will cover approximately 1 mile. Please arrive by 3:15 as tour will begin promptly at 3:30.
Part 2 (Brooklyn Heights) 5:15 pm. Meet on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall, on the north side of the hall facing the square. This section will take approximately 1 hour and cover approximately 1 mile.
Filmmaker, writer and weird horror fan Jane Rose has for several years helped filmmakers in and around New York City bring their ghoulish visions to life via her special fx makeup work, while her own films have been screened at the H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon, the Coney Island Film Festival and other venues. She is currently at work on Inappropriate Films horror feature Moose Head Over the Mantel, for which she is a segment director and fx artist. http://www.themooseheadoverthemantel.com/
