The Etude Session Presents: The Dave Stoler Quartet (feat. Joe "Mags" Magnarelli)
On Friday, January 15, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. we will bring jazz to the Étude Sessions, an initiative to nurture live music as a fundraiser for The Étude Group schools in Sheboygan.
Dave Stoler Jazz pianist and multi-keyboardist Dave Stoler is from Madison, Wisconsin. For the last seven years, he has been a featured member of the Madison-based Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Sextet, which has been voted Madison's favorite jazz group for four years in a row. He also leads his own quartet and has appeared regularly with his group at Smalls Jazz Club in New York City's West Village.
Joe Magnarelli, or "Mags", is a regular name in the New York and International Jazz scene. He plays regularly in NYC and recently finished an Italian tour and the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival. In his decades-long career, he has seen numerous accolades, awards, and released several albums. He has played with some of the industry's best, including the Vanguard Orchestra, Jane Monheit, Jon Hendricks, Jimmy Cobb, Louis Hayes, Alvin Queen, Dado Maroni, Marty Sheller, Tom Harrell Big Band, and many more. While not on tour, he is an adjunct professor of music at Julliard School of Music and Rutgers University, and teaches jazz clinics and master classes around the world.
THE ÉTUDE SESSIONS Proceeds from The Étude Sessions ensure transformative experiences for students in the arts and academics such as college readiness initiatives, international travel, and artist in residence programs, that would not otherwise be available to public school students. During the 2014-2015 season a portion of the funds helped send students on a service-learning trip to Nicaragua in June. Students envisioned their professional lives beyond high school through participation in creative writing festivals, dance workshops, and engineering in the community experiences. They also visited eight different colleges in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Madison. The intention The Étude Sessions is to make these experiences accessible to all students in the Étude schools, 80% of whom are first generation college students and over 50% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.
The Étude Sessions is the brainchild of Troy Tousey, founder of Open Mind Studios of Sheboygan, Wis. Troy, an avid community supporter and passionate live music fan, hosted house concerts in his backyard and attended hundreds of live performances during his years at Northwestern University, and while living in Colorado and Sheboygan. Troy was vice president of The Étude Group Governing Board, part of the Sheboygan Area School District, at the time of his death in June of 2012. Troy dreamed of presenting music like PHOX to Sheboygan to benefit the community, the music, and The Étude Group schools.
