Salon Series II with Maggie Savarino
Salon II with Maggie Savarino The Theo Salon Series continues into the new year with Maggie Savarino, author of The Seasonal Cocktail Companion - a cocktail recipe and project book (aka "arts & crafts, with booze"). Maggie's book contains recipes to make your own aquavit, bitters, limoncello, tonic water, and a host of other things to round out your liquor cabinet. The book also offers a wealth of basics - syrups, salts, herbs and more.
Our conversation will riff on DIY culture, the necessity and also the romance. It is necessary for some who can't afford little luxuries. It's romantic to others as Martha Stewart showed us ages ago. Now there is the Americana aspect, the appeal of a simpler time, of skills or knowledge lost. Maggie is interested in how we tell our stories. Some bottles behind the bar are more storied than others, whether it's one of bootlegging or an ancient monk-held recipe known to two people in the entire world. We create stories when we make our own jam, quilts, bitters or a hat, and a larger sociological element at play. Whatever you do yourself, the product is usually intended to share or give away. And there seems to be an overriding collective need for that generosity right now. This is an open conversation where participation is appreciated!
THEO SALON SERIES Our Salon Series celebrates the wealth of literary and culinary talent of the Northwest. Each salon will include a robust conversation moderated by food maverick Michael Hebb, and our founders Joe Whinney and Debra Music. We will debut a confection co-created by the Theo kitchen and our featured guest.
