Intertwined Fates: The Orca and Salmon Connection in the Northwest
Please join us on October 7th, 2015, at 6:30pm, at the Seattle Aquarium for Intertwined Fates: The Orca-Salmon Connection, and learn how to keep Southern Resident killer whales and wild salmon from disappearing from our waters. At this event, sponsored by the Orca Salmon Alliance, the critical connections between Columbia Basin salmon and Southern Resident orcas will be emphasized, expanding the understanding of the key importance of both species, and the ways in which their fates are intertwined. Most importantly, we will discuss how to help these iconic species survive and thrive in the Pacific Northwest.
The evening will include a reception with food and drinks and educational tables. Our distinguished keynote speaker, Dr. Carl Safina, acclaimed scientist and award-winning author, will talk about his latest book, "Beyond Words, What Animals Think and Feel." In it, he explores how non-humans feel, what they think, and how they relate to us and each other. At once thought-provoking, inspiring, and a call to action, Dr. Safina will share the experiences he had with orcas while crafting the book.
Following his talk, Dr. Safina will join a panel including Southern Resident orca and Chinook salmon experts: Kenneth Balcomb, Senior Scientist at the Center for Whale Research; Jacques White, Executive Director of Long Live the Kings; Dr. Howard Schaller, salmon scientist with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (invited); and Lynne Barre, marine biologist charged with orca recovery at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Marine Fisheries Services (invited) to discuss the challenges that lie ahead, and some ideas to boost the populations of the Southern Residents and their favorite prey.
6:30pm: Join the panelists for hors d'oeuvres and a no-host bar in the "Touch Tank" area of the Aquarium; socialize, network and speak to representatives of local and national conservation organizations to learn more about how you can turn your love for orcas and Chinook salmon into action for their survival.
7:30pm: Keynote speaker Dr. Carl Safina followed by panel discussion and Q&A
9:00pm: Dr. Safina will be available to sign copies of his books following the panel discussion.
This event is sponsored by the Orca Salmon Alliance: Defenders of Wildlife, Earthjustice, Endangered Species Coalition, Natural Resources Defense Council, Oceana, Orca Network, Save Our Wild Salmon, Southern Resident Killer Whale Chinook Salmon Initiative, Washington Environmental Council, and Whale and Dolphin Conservation.
All proceeds from the ticket sales will go directly to support the work of the Alliance.
