This all-star concert brings together artists from and inspired by Southern Appalachia. From the high lonesome singing of master North Carolina musicians Riley Baugus & Kirk Sutphin, to the barn-burning bluegrass of acclaimed band Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, this is the Seattle Folk Festival's gala event.
Anna Roberts-Gevalt and Elizabeth LaPrelle, two young singers/musicians from Virginia, will premier a new crankie (hand-rolled felt scroll designed around a traditional ballad) and perform the music they've learned first-hand in the mountains. The Canote Brothers are some of Seattle's favorite old-time musicians, with a rollicking stage presence harkening back to the old days of country radio. Riley Baugus & Kirk Sutphin are neighbors in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and grew up playing with masters like Tommy Jarrell and Fred Cockerham. Riley Baugus is T-Bone Burnett's favorite banjo player, appearing on albums with Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, Robert Plant, and most famously in the movie Cold Mountain. Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen are one of the hottest bluegrass bands on the circuit, and their live shows are a near-religious experience.
