Patricia Barker presents: Olivier Wevers' A Midsummer Night's Dream
Grand Rapids Ballet's contemporary version of Olivier Wevers' A Midsummer Night's Dream is told through the eyes of a young Nick Bottom. In the work, Young Nick, the little boy over whom the royal fairy couple quarrels, is a changeling with no lines. Wevers sees the fairies as the real protagonists, rather than the mortals. The tangled, teasing, confrontational relationship of the fairy king and queen, Oberon and Titania, expresses real love's complexity. This production was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Ballet for the 2014-15.
"Grand Rapids Ballet's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is an engaging journey of astonishing originality" Jeffrey Kaczmarcyk
"Wevers' fresh approach to the story and vibrant choreography along with Michael Mazzola's atmospheric lighting made for a most unique and entertaining approach to any Midsummer ballet" Steve Sucato
