The Carver Center and white road Dance Media are proud to present North Country (2011), the eighth evening-length work from choreographer Marisa Gruneberg and her Brooklyn-based dance company. A quartet with an original score by pianist and composer Justin Sherburn (Okkervil River), North Country examines our collective home environment in flux. Using intricately patterned movement, dynamic duet forms, and stark, open staging, the piece investigates our changing concept of home, and where within this change we choose to exist.
More specifically North Country explores themes of domesticity, comfort and shelterthe reality of the basic and ordinary at a time when so much of our reality is becoming virtual and technologically dependent. Will we always need a roof above and a door that closes behind us to declare ourselves "at home"? Or will there be an app for that? Do we sit at a table with a companion, or do we sit at a computer with the internet and the whole world? Are we as a species entering into a new primal era, foraging and fending with our devices, and are we as people ready for that? Will we charge forth into blank spaces, leaving the home spaces behind, or will we lock the door and bake our grandmother's casserole? Is "home" a transportable concept after all?
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
Exclusively sponsored by the Brooklyn Brewery.
