Music-Theatre Group Talk & Jam
On Saturday, October 1st, Music-Theatre Group looks ahead to the new work coming up this season and next. Join us for an exciting evening with the artists! Douglas Cuomo & David Schweizer (composer and director of The Winter's Journey), Daniel Fish, Susie Ibarra, & Yusef Komunyakaa (director, composer and librettist of Saturnalia), and Nico Muhly (composer of Dark Sisters) will talk about and present excerpts from their upcoming works. The event will be moderated by the ever-inventive David Herskovits, founder and artistic director of Target Margin Theater.
About the Works A re-imagining of Muller's Winterreisse cycle freely set to improvisational jazz music, Winter's Journey chronicles the story of an unnamed traveler as she sings a long and evolving mad scene after being spurned by her lover.
Saturnalia, a co-production with Roulette in its new Brooklyn home, tells the story of three American men visiting Bangkoktheir version of paradisewho find themselves confronted with a metaphysical detective at a mysterious club.
Dark Sisters, a co-commission and co-production with Gotham Chamber Opera and Opera Company of Philadelphia, is a suspenseful, emotional, and lyrical depiction of one woman's struggle with life and faith and the universal dilemma of whether to stay or leave. The opera opens a window into the lives of Eliza and her sister wives, members of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), a polygamous sect based in the southwestern United States.
