Pins and Needles by Harold Rome 1937
Downtown Music Productions presents A Lower East Production of the 1937 Topical Musical Revue: Pins and Needles by Harold Rome Musical Director: Mimi Stern-Wolfe. Stage Direction: Eleanor Reissa. Featuring: Laura Wolfe, Darcy Dunn, Jeannine Otis, Mark Singer, Charles Baran, Michael Schilke, Paul Malamphy As history repeats itself, so do revivals of historically relevant theatrical attractions . With it's critically acclaimed score and lyrics, PINS AND NEEDLES was and is a unique call for social justice and fair equity. Originally produced by the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and performed entirely by union workers who diligently rehearsed after their day jobs ended, the original cast, made up of cutters, basters and sewing machine operators, appeared in skits spoofing everything from Fascist European dictators to bigots in the DAR. PINS AND NEEDLES opened in 1937 at the Princess Theatre on 39th Street(which also happened to be their union hall) and broke all Broadway records--over 1100 performances-- running until 1941. The show's composer/lyricist, Harold Rome, would later go on to write FANNY, DESTRY RIDES AGAIN and I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE among others.
