Hot August (Inspired Art) Night
Bring your art supplies and tap into your creative self at the End of Summer Inspired Art Night on Friday, August 7, 2015, 8-9:30 pm, at Site Painters Art Studio, 330 SE 52nd Ave. in Portland. Alternate Destination, a World Chamber Jazz trio will play original music as audience members engage in their art form of choice, be that painting, collaging, Ikebana, pen and ink, sculpting or writing prose or poetry.
The event is divided into two parts; in the first hour artists create work in their medium while the live music inspires their brush. After a break, the musicians will select some of the new art and create new music on the spot that is inspired by that art.
The musicians for the evening are Mary Ellen Grace on saxophones and clarinet, Joel Kleinbaum on bassoon and clarinet, and Michael Hagmeier on guitar, didjeridu, and percussion. Alternate Destination plays original music that blends Western classical chamber music with world music and jazz influences.
The unique sounds of Alternate Destination include the didjeridu, exotic musical modes, extended improvisation, and ever-changing meters. Said one listener, "I might as well surrender to the odd meters and just groove."
