WILD FLAVORS Fundraiser

October 16th, 3-6pm at Haley House Bakery Café, 12 Dade Street, Roxbury, MA/617 445 0900

Tickets are for purchase ($100) at:
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/198923

An $80 ticket (with no copy of Wild Flavors) is also available (with $80 tax deductible).

At 3pm on October 16th, various chefs will gather at the Haley House Bakery Café in Roxbury's Dudley Square to prepare and serve dishes from Founding Chef Didi Emmons' third cookbook, Wild Flavors: One Chef's Transformative Year Cooking from Eva's Garden.  The book chronicles Didi's unique friendship with the esteemed, legendary South Dartmouth farmer Eva Sommaripa and details the unusual plants Eva introduced to Didi.  Part cookbook, part story, part manifesto, this book offers readers the opportunity to explore some of the underutilized ingredients in our biosphere while enjoying Didi's entertaining anecdotal delivery. Guests at this event will sample dishes made with the absolute freshest ingredients from Eva's nutrient-rich garden by Emmons and some of Boston's finest chefs, including Robert Mancuso (The Country Club, Chestnut Hill), Asia Mei (Sam's at Louis),  and Doug Rodrigues (Clio).

Menu:

From the Guest Chefs-
-Seared sea scallops with ginger-pea green vichyssoise and sesame crisp
-Hot-smoked salmon, beet-horseradish remoulade and preserved lemon vinaigrette with cilantro and mint.
-White orchid root gazpacho with molasses croutons, onion berry capers, and radishes.
-Black Walnut Baklava

From our Staff and the Wild Flavors Book
-Peter's Kale Salad
-Sorrel and Goat Cheese Pesto with Pasta
-Neil's Wild Watercress Salad with Pea Greens
-Local Cloumage Cheese with African Basil Apple Salsa on chips
-East Indian Lemon grass Quencher
-Juniper Berry Shortbread

Chelsea Green will publish Wild Flavors in a hardcover edition in early October ($34.95 SRLP), and admission to this event includes a copy of the book.  Much as the book offers readers an inside look at the exchanges between chefs and farmers, guests will be given an opportunity to see the "back-of-the house" at Haley House Bakery Café.  Guests will graze at eight food tables where they will sample delights such as autumn olives, juniper berries, sun-chokes, claytonia, cardoons and chervil - this is not your average Tasting Opportunity!

Wild Flavors follows a year at Eva's Garden through the seasons, showcasing Emmons' creative talents, using absolutely fresh herbs and wild edibles.  The author profiles 46 plants, with growing instruction, as well as details on preparation, storage, preservation and health benefits.

Beginning in 2005, Emmons was the Founding Chef at Haley House Bakery Café, a non-profit community café with an inspiring purpose. The café serves affordable, natural, healthy, delicious meals in an era of fast food. Soon after her arrival at HHBC, in partnership with Boston Police Officer Bill Baxter, Emmons started Take Back the Kitchen, an afterschool program focused on Health, Nutrition and Culinary Arts.  Today, Emmons is Executive Chef of the Take Back the Kitchen Program at Haley House Bakery Café.
