First produced in 421 BC in Athens by its 27-year-old author, PEACE is rarely performed today, yet it has been called one of Aristophanes' wittiest and cleverest comedies. Written and performed during a time of protracted peace negotiations between the city-states involved in the Peloponnesian War, PEACE is an encouragement not to abandon the attempt to find a way for all of Greece to live in peaceful co-existence.
PEACE is an example of the genre known as Old Comedy: briefly, the author sets up a ridiculous situation and then works out the consequences. The style is farcical, presentational, vigorously physical, often grotesque, satirical and very topical - it has been called one of the most socially engaged of all forms of theatre. The victims of Aristophanes' comic rebukes were probably sitting in his audience. When performing Aristophanes it is always necessary to update or abandon the more obscure local references.
PEACE by Classic Greek Theatre of Oregon This CGTO production will be based in Aristophanes, rather than, as our audiences have come to expect, an attempt to be faithful to the original. For example, in the CGTO production Trygaeus becomes Trickyass and the dung-beetle becomes a VW bug. The show this year will be a Brechtian, Felliniesque circus, highly physical, very colorful and pretty silly.
