Whence
Collaboration can sometimes lead to artistic hierarchy, but in the creation of Khecari's Whence, choreographer and dancer Jonathan Meyer and composer Christopher Preissing give movement and sound equal importance as they balance their individual artistic visions towards the goal of what may be called a sound-movement opera. Art forms combine in equal measures, express a single or related theme concurrently, and yet remain independent. The third and final installment of the Home series, Whence, is both autobiographical and universal as it examines the human experience of doubt and questioning, of who we are and where we are going.
A solo dancer, Jonathan Meyer, is accompanied by 4 female vocalists (Louise Cloutier, Carol Genetti, Stacia Spencer, and Mimi Wallman) led by sound and vocal director Christopher Preissing. Preissing, who created a sound score with over 12 channels of processed field recordings, also directs a "crowd" of varying numbers (10-12) who layer and augment the experience of witnessing.
