***Due to unforseen health issues, HR will not be able to make it to tonight's show. But fear not The Scotch Bonnets always bring the good-times vibes. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready for a fun-filled night of rockin' reggae rhythms and sweet & soulful ska. PLUS Caz will be kicking off the show with her signature mix of rock, R&B, and reggae. For years she has been a big part of the DC and NYska scenes, and it's truly an honor to have her on the Bright Box stage.
THE SCOTCH BONNETS When you say the words 'scotch bonnets,' hot sauce aficionados think of the wrinkly peppers that are a staple of Caribbean cooking. But to reggae music fans, The Scotch Bonnets are the Baltimore/DC outfit who always bring the good-love vibe with their funky reggae, rocksteady, and soul-flavored sound. Though the current line-up boasts members of Scream and Left Alone, the band is the baby of singer/guitarist Kristin Forbes, upon whom the local reggae cats bestowed the nom de guerre Lady Hatchet because of her razor-sharp guitar chops.
Since their debut in December 2009, The Bonnets have been gigging regularly throughout the region. The have opened for The English Beat, The Pietasters, The Slackers, King Django, The Toasters, Bad Manners, and many others.
In April 2013, The Bonnets released their much-anticipated debut album, Live Ya Life. Recorded by the band over two and a half years, the album is a collection of Lady Hatchet's upbeat tunes about tough times, unrequited love, and the fighting spirit to get through it all. The Bonnets raised the money to duplicate the CD through a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Among Live Ya Life's many contributors, Angelo Moore of the punk/funk pioneers Fishbone brought his saxophone orchestra to the track "Pim Pim Pim." He also sat in with The Bonnets during their set at the 2011 Vans Warped Tour and has collaborated with Lady Hatchet on other material.
CAZ Caz kicks off the show with her signature mix of rock, R&B, and reggae. For years she has been a big part of the DC and NY ska scenes, boasting an impressive resume that includes The Checkered Cabs, New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble, Victor Rice Octet, The Pressure Sounds, Caz and The Commotions, The Ambitions, The Thrilltones and the Bandhouse Gigs.
