The Owl & The Pussycat
After more than 50 years of anticipation, audiences in Vancouver will finally have the opportunity to see the Owl and the Pussycat. The Owl and the Pussycat, written by Bill Manhoff and starring Alan Alda and Diana Sands, opened on Broadway in 1964 and ran for over a year and there is also a film version, starring Barbra Streisand and George Segal, created in 1970. The play has long been a favorite of acting teachers for it's 'two-hander' structure and its brisk, demanding dialogue. And so it is that two alumni of Vancouver's Actor's Foundry, Steven Roberts and Panthea Vatandoost, fell in love with the play and inspired them to establish a theatre company.
Set in 'Frisco in the 60's, the play involves two characters: Felix (Ryan Hesp), a reclusive, bookish, wannabe writer and Doris (Vatandoost)), a saucy, flirtatious call-girl and wannabe actress. Both are lonely. They are 'opposites', and, as we know, opposites attract.
Although the play is billed as a comedy, Director John R Taylor considers it to be a true and classic drama: "This play was written just two years after 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' and there are many interesting parallels between the two plays. On the surface it is a comedy, but the underlying story is a drama, a love story, a journey towards self-discovery and acceptance".
Produced by Richard Duke.
