Ad Hoc Music Series 2011
The Fishtank Performance Studio presents the second season of the Ad Hoc Music Series curated by Resident Artist Peter Lawless. The series of monthly concerts will present Kansas City's finest musicians in the Fishtank's intimate setting. The theme of the series is Improvisation. Though commonly associated with jazz, improvisation is present to some degree in all musical genres. The musicians in these concerts are fluent in a variety of musical languages, and they will showcase their knowledge of pop, rock, classical, avant garde, and folk musics in extemporaneous collaborations and original compositions. All of the concerts will take place at 8pm on the last sunday of the month.
SHOWS: JUNE 26 - BONE CRUSHER - an experimental/improvisational ensemble based at the University of Louisville in collaboration with the Hite Art Institute. Featuring acoustic instrument, live electronics, and projection art, BONE CRUSHER seeks to bring modern experimental music to venues outside of the concert hall.
JULY 31 - PHONOLOGOTRONIC - uses songs from our past to hold your memory hostage to itself. They are jazz-like, pop-like, like-like (as if all the similes are put together).
SEPTEMBER 25 - HOMINID - Hunter Long's project exploring the use of electronic sounds in new modern jazz. Hunter combines his love of the beats of Bjork, Kanye West, and Radiohead with his studies with modern jazz icons Dave Douglas and Greg Osby. With Russell Thorpe, Matt Leifer, and Jeff Stocks, they expand the music to create one of the most forward think ing groups in Kansas City.
OCTOBER 30 - THE NIGHT'S BRIGHT LIGHTS - another of Jeff Davis' progressive musical groups which are providing the soundtrack to The Unwind, the large-scale work Davis has been creating for the last fifteen year. TNBL provides a new musical sound, with use of mantra-like phrases, big beats, and walls of guitar, by way of an analog loop station, reminiscent of classic album-rock guitar indulgence, with an otherworldly-world music vibe.
NOVEMBER 27 - Peter Lawless' GAME NIGHT - This special event will feature series curator PETER LAWLESS and his closest musical friends performing a number of original "game pieces." Written over the last five years and inspired in part by the early work of John Zorn, these interactive pieces of for improvising musicians inject much-needed humor and fun into the often stuffy world of Avant-Garde music.
