50 Plays by Joe Janes
50 Plays by Joe Janes is a follow-up to the remarkable and insane 365 Sketches of 2010. Janes spent months working with fifty local directors and their chosen casts to write a ten-minute play for each one. Each director showcases his or her own specific take on the limitless imagination of the former stand-up comic and Emmy Award winner turned instructor/director/performer.
"At this point in the Off Loop theater scene, a festival of ten-minute plays is old hat," says producer Don Hall. "A festival of fifty ten-minute plays, written on spec by one playwright? Tony Kushner and Edward Albee combined aren't that mentally unstable. In fact, that should be the lede - 'Joe Janes is more mentally unstable than the artistic Love Child of Kushner and Albee'."
The mini-festival will take place in Hugan Hall, the cabaret space at Strawdog Theater and will feature pieces directed by fifty directors (including Second City guru Michael Gellman, Sketchfest mastermind Brian Posen, Neofuturist John "Jughead"Pierson, and Off Loop legend Rich Cotovsky) and a collective 178 actors.
