A ROSE AMONG THORNS: a Tribute to Rosa Parks
Commemorating the 55th anniversary year of the act of civil disobedience that transformed the Civil Rights movement, "A ROSE AMONG THORNS" a Tribute to Rosa Parks, created and performed by Ella Joyce and directed by Dan Martin, will be presented by The Essential Theatre in a Limited engagement Sept 20th thru 24th. Recognizable from her acclaimed performances as Eleanor on, Roc'; FOX television network, and Jasmin on My Wife and Kids; ABC, Ella Joyce delivers a first person portrayal with the quiet dignity and fire of a Rosa Parks who is fully human. Ella Joyce is a versatile and celebrated actress of stage, film and television. She is best remembered and loved as Eleanor on the hit TV show "Roc", and her recurring role as Jasmin on "My Wife and Kids". Notable theatre work includes the original roles of Risa in Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's world premiere of "Two Trains Running" at Yale Rep, directed by the late master Director Lloyd Richards, Tonya in August Wilson's world premiere of "King Hedley II"; and Lily Ann Green in Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's "Crumbs From The Table Of Joy" earning both the JEFF Award, the Black Theatre Alliance Award, and the most wonderful reviews in the city of Chicago. She has performed in prestigious Regional Theaters around the country which includes The Old Globe (San Diego), South Coast Rep (Costa Mesa), Second Stage Theater (NYC), The Huntington, Seattle Rep, Pittsburgh Public O'Reilly Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, and The Yale Repertory Theater. She has been an honored performer at the National Black Theater Festival, (NBTF) in Winston-Salem, NC. Other Theatre credits includes James Bronson's "Willie & Esther", Gus Edwards' "Louis & Ophelia", Ron Milner's "Don't Get God Started!", and the late Yolanda King's "Steppin Into Tomorrow." She is the recipient of many acknowledgments including the Best Actress AUDELCO Award in New York, NY for Ira Jeffries "Odessa", several NAACP Image Nominations for "Roc", and BET network's Children's program "Storyporch". Her many Film and TV credits include Sister Watkins in Warner Bros. "PREACHER'S KID", Detective Waller in New Line Cinema's popular action film "SET IT OFF"; the Nurse in "BUBBA HO-TEP"; "OUR FAMILY WEDDING", Disney's "SELMA, LORD SELMA"; "THE JAMIE FOXX SHOW", "SEINFELD", "EVE", "UNCLE P" , "A SIMPLE PROMISE', "FORBIDDEN FRUITS", "WHO MADE THE POTATO SALAD", "DEAD OF WINTER" as well as dramatic appearances in music videos including TLC's multiple Award Winning video "WATERFALLS". She is the voice of Zora Neale Hurston in Ron Milner's "RUBY MC COLLUM STORY" (books-on-tape) produced by Susan Lowenberg's Los Angeles Theaterworks. Ms. Joyce has graced the covers of many magazine publications such as JET, Black Elegance, Black Masks, and has been featured in TV Times and Upscale Magazine. She has received several Spirit Of Detroit Awards, The Key To The City of Ft. Lauderdale, the NBTF Special Recognition Award for her Contributions to American Theater, and Actor Of The Year Award from the Houston Ensemble Theater. She has toured and presented her highly praised one-woman show to critical acclaim performing in 26 cities over the past several years, earning an NAACP nomination among many other awards and citations.
