Bernaroo Music & Arts Festival
After an extended hiatus, 2015 marks the return of the Bernaroo Music & Arts Festival. On July 24 & 25, the streets of downtown New Bern will be filled with some of the finest artists the state has to offer. Combining a love of music, visual art and vibrant culture, Bernaroo Music & Arts Festival is a family friendly, community-building event that showcases the rich talents North Carolina has to offer.
July 24 will kick off the festival with music at the Isaac Taylor Garden while July 25 will serve as an all-day downtown excursion highlighting local artists, musicians, restaurants and craft vendors. The evening will end with another marquee event at the Isaac Taylor Garden as well.
Friday: T0W3RS - Raleigh, NC T0W3RS is an act unlike any other for the North Carolina music scene. Landing somewhere between David Bowie, Prince and LCD Soundsystem, Derek Torres crafts intricately arranged electronic pop music that's as emotive as it is energetic. Nostalgia-soaked bursts of triumphant melodies and unforgettable hooks will keep fans and newcomers alike movin' throughout the night.
Matt Phillips & The Philharmonic - Carrboro, NC Matt Phillips & The Philharmonic have swiftly become one of the most exciting roots-based artists throughout the past few years. The band originally solidified a strong foothold in Eastern North Carolina during their stay in Greenville, but Carrboro is home for this soulful, R&B leaning folk group. Matt Phillips is the songwriting anchor that serves as the foundation for this group, but you're liable to find keys, sax, bass and drums accompanying this bluesy crooner.
The Take Kindlies - New Bern, NC One of the few New Bern natives of the weekend, The Take Kindlies bring a barn burning blend of rockabilly, blues, and punk rock to kick off the evening at Isaac Taylor on Friday. The duo is comprised of Joe Stewart on guitar/vocals and Eric Pittman on standup bass, providing a stripped-down take on gritty delta-blues with a hint of weirdness in the mix.
Saturday: The Chit Nasty Band - Raleigh, NC If there's one thing that's guaranteed to get you moving at Bernaroo this year, it's the Chit Nasty Band. This five-piece funk rock group from Raleigh puts on one of the most electrifying live shows in the state. As the leaders of the 'Nasty Nation,' The Chit Nasty Band emanates infectious grooves and positive vibes, making for a sweat-filled dance party you're sure to remember.
Temple5 - Wilmington, NC Blending elements of jazz, soul and hip-hop, Temple5 will be one of the most exciting and diverse acts of the weekend. This seven-piece group from Wilmington is centered around soaring horns, smooth piano riffs, bass grooves and skittering percussion, but the buoyant lyricism ties it all together perfectly. For hip-hop fans and newcomers alike, Temple5 is a mind-bending live act that engages your body and your soul.
Thick Modine - Raleigh, NC What better way to get your Saturday night started than some straight up rock n' roll? Thick Modine is one of two bands performing with New Bern ties throughout the festival, and their Southern-tinged, blues driven garage rock will swagger and sway throughout the Isaac Taylor Garden.
