Chicken Keeping 101

Paul and wife Susan grew up around chickens. They have many years of practical experience and learned by doing, & refining what their parents and grandparents taught them. They have tried a lot of different breeds and methods. Sign up and learn from their experience! Topics will include: Summery of chicken keeping regs in the Spokane area; housing; breed selection; feeding and caring for chickens; raising baby chicks; & egg production.

They started raising chickens on their own in 1995, with 12 backyard hens. They sold excess eggs to friends and neighbors. In 2001 they started S&P Homestead Farms to sell eggs and produce at the Liberty Lake Farmers Market. Today they have 50 hens, and have started selling eggs to the Main Market Co-op grocery store. The demand for fresh local eggs is so great that they are currently expanding their barn to support a flock of 100 hens!
