In Bloom
"In Bloom" is an original stage adaptation of Circe, a chapter from the James Joyce novel Ulysses. In a mesmerizing spectacle of color and sound this most surreal, highly controversial and perhaps sexiest chapter of Joyce's timeless novel is put to the stage.
Ulysses (the novel itself), was banned for decades with over 500 copies burned by the US Postal Service!
The story finds us on June 16, 1904 in the Red Light district of Dublin, in the witching hours of night. We follow Leopold Bloom, as he searches for young Stephen Dedalus through brothels of hallucinogenic visions woven by the looming mistress Bella. Illumined by circus acts and seductive hooch dances we enter Bloom's mind revealing his most hidden fears and erotic obsessions.
Accompanied by "The Black Boatmen" whose music blends melancholic Irish ballads with high energy klezmer tunes, Bloom (neither a "Real Irishman" nor a "Real Jew") stumbles from one dream-scape to another. Aerials, Burlesque dance, jigs and reels, all merge to a fantastic cabaret of the senses offering a visually stunning version of Joyce's magical Circe chapter.
The visions of Mr. Joyce both ineluctable and misconceived are brought to life by the talented Durangoan cast and crew. Tickets can also be purchased at "Southwest Sound"
