Acclaimed organist Dr. Joyce Jones will perform at Our Lady of Refuge Church (2020 Foster Avenue, Brooklyn NY) on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Brooklyn Pipe Organ Encounter presented by the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Dr. Jones has devoted her professional life to making friends for the organ, through community concerts, organ dedications, children's concerts, and "Access to Music" programs. She has been widely acclaimed since making her debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as the only organist to win the prestigious G.B.Dealey award.
Her numerous engagements have included such venues as the Riverside Church, the Mormon Tabernacle, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Chartres Cathedral, and Trinity Church-Wall Street. She has been a featured soloist at many regional and national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, including the AGO centennial convention in New York City in 1996. She was the first woman to perform on the organ at the Crystal Cathedral, the first organist to play for the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the only woman organist chosen to play with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra at the inauguration of the Ruffatti organ in Davies Symphony Hall.
Dr. Jones refers to herself as the "accidental organist" because when she was an undergraduate piano student at the University of Texas, she sprained her hand badly. During the six-week recovery period, she studied the organ, doing pedal exercises. And that set the course of her life. At every recital she plays, she offers a piece that features the pedals. "It is my way of thanking God," Ms. Jones says, "for showing me what he wanted me to do with my life."
All proceeds from this concert benefit the Brooklyn Pipe Organ Encounter.
