Paddy Keenan
As noted Irish music critic, John O'Regan, observed, 'In Irish music htere are legends and legends and then there's Paddy Keenan.' Bursting on the Irish music scene in the 1970's as the turbo jet engine propelling the groundbreaking traditional group, The Bothy Band, Keenan is widely regarded as the most accomplished and exciting uilleann piper of our time. A past recipient of Irish-language TV station TG4's coveted 'Traditional Musician of the Year,' Paddy's innovative, inspired and improvisational playing in the wild and unfettered open style, that has been handed down in his Travelling (Irish Gypsy) family for generations, explodes with power, passion and panache. Equally adept on low whistle, Paddy's not-to-be-missed concert, with a guitarist TBA, will feature selctions from his new CD to be released later this year. As bluegrass music giant Tim O'Brien has written, 'Paddy Keenan has few peers in the world of Irish traditional music. For over 30 years he has focused on a simple but rarely attainable goal: to present the music in its essence... consistently mining the rough ore of jigs, reels and airs and worked and reworked their presentation until we, his audience, get to hear the real, pure, life-affirming beauty of them.
