PROGRESSIVE PERSPECTIVES presents
BERNIE SANDERS IN SAN FRANCISCO
Bernie Sanders is the most progressive member of the U.S. Senate. During his four years there, he has taken on virtually every powerful special interest in the country. He understands that the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few is fundamentally incompatible with democracy -- and he acts on that understanding in ways that can inspire all of us.
In his talk, he will give us an overview of his work in several key areas:
HANDS OFF SOCIAL SECURITY! Bernie has recently formed a congressional caucus for the purpose of protecting social security. He is adamant in his conviction that the budget must not be balanced on the backs of working families and the most vulnerable among us.
HEALTH CARE. Bernie is continuing to work for a Medicare-for-all/single-payer system and to safeguard Medicare itself for current and future recipients. It is through Bernie's efforts that states have the right to pursue single-payer solutions.
WALL STREET AND THE ECONOMY. Bernie believes that the greed, recklessness and illegal behavior of several huge Wall Street financial institutions have driven the country into severe economic decline. He is working on several fronts to reign in this out-of-control financial sector, but he also believes that these efforts can only succeed if there is a significant sector of the American public that is informed, organized, and prepared to take on the powerful special interests dominating Washington.
GLOBAL WARMING. No one in congress is more aware of the consequences of global warming than Bernie Sanders. As chair of the Green Jobs Subcommittee and a member of both the Environmental Committee and the Energy Committee, he is working hard to break America's dependence of fossil fuels, move the country into energy efficiency and sustainable energy, and create millions of well-paying jobs. He has authored legislation which is now providing billions for the creation of wind, solar, bio-mass, and geothermal projects.
FOREIGN POLICY: Bernie is working actively to end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and to make major cuts in military spending rather than slashing desperately needed social services and spending that creates jobs.
