Class A is a play about four addicts each partnered with their drug of choice personified as a separate character. Jenny a fashion student with a coke addiction. Brad a gay man who's partner in crime is Crytal Meth. Dan the bank man has an alter ego by the name on Heroin and Harry the good boy who loves run with MDMA. Finally we have Dorey, the dealer, pimp and teacher of the class. Dorey takes us through a journey exploring the addicts lives and teaching the audience a good lesson!
This is a class in "Mourning and Melancholia", Freud wrote that the ego incorporates the objects that it mourns in order to preserve them from oblivion, populating itself with their phantoms.
The conversations these drugs present for these four addicts recreate objects in their absence, both affirming and denying their propensity to disappear.
Class A is an inquiry into the public and cultural space through which our notions of good, evil, right, wrong, joy and sorrow circulate. From what depths stem emotions? In what solitude do we look at ourselves in the face?
