Stairwell Sisters, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West ,
The Stairwell Sisters -- the Bay Area's favorite old-time all-gal teardown, featured at Lincoln Center and on A Prairie Home Companion. Cahalen Morrison & Eli West -- old-time & bluegrass with northwest deepwater roots. Misner & Smith -- sweet masters of Americana and winners of the West Coast Songwriters Association's Song of the Year competition.

Driving stringband music, sweet country harmonies, and red-hot buckdancing: the Stairwell Sisters offer all this and more when they bring their passion for old-time country songs and rowdy fiddle tunes to the Freight for a wild, good-time show. Energetic musicianship and tight vocal arrangements are the order of the hour when Lisa Berman (dobro), Stephanie Prausnitz (fiddle), Evie Ladin (clawhammer banjo and clogging), Martha Hawthorne (bass), and Sue Sandlin (guitar and tiple) take the stage with their fiddle tunes from Alabama to Scotland, old songs of trains, boats and possums, and new songs of trial and work, loss and love, and all-night parties.

With a handful of acoustic instruments and the clear harmonies of bluegrass song traditions, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West have created an entirely new strain of roots music. Their sound crosses the warmth of old-time with the fierceness of bluegrass and high lonesome harmonies that would fit into any evening at the Opry. Together, they've taken time-tested musical traditions and bent them into new shapes to fit a new world. Cahalen Morrison is a genuine, old-time musician, who blends his love of American roots music with the dusty land of his childhood in rural New Mexico. He builds on influences like Norman Blake, Greg Brown, and Tim O'Brien and his music twists and turns in familiar, yet unexpected ways. Eli West, a distinctive multi-instrumentalist with bluegrass roots, has found common ground with Cahalen from which many beautiful ideas have grown. Based in Seattle, Eli is a busy arranger and composer with an addiction to syncopation and crooked harmonies. The roots of Cahalen Morrison & Eli West are strong, their branches are shady, and the guitars, banjos, mandolins, and harmonies will carry you far off the beaten path to a place under open Western skies.

Misner & Smith  Sam Misner and Megan Smith began their musical collaboration after working together as actors on a production of Woody Guthrie's American Song and immediately recognized a mutual love of Americana music. Since then, the two have built a steady and loyal following. Balancing their careers as actors and musicians is no easy task, but the two have found the art of storytelling to be one of the common threads running through both forms. Crafting original songs rich in meaning and texture, the duo's sound is centered around unique vocal harmonies and evocative lyrics, and in 2007, their song "Madeline (Paradise Cracked)" won the West Coast Songwriters Association's Song of the Year competition. Their influences span many genres ranging from traditional and old-time music, bluegrass, folk, and rock and roll, to reggae, Motown, and the blues. Strong songwriting and an exceptional blend of voices are what set this pair apart.
