Journeys Art Festival! - Authors Showcase
If you love to read or write, have a passion for poetry, or have a sense of curiosity, then Journeys Art Festival! is a must-attend this year. Please join us for a very special, thought provoking evening on Thursday, May 28 at 6:30 pm. We rounded up a panel of acclaimed authors who will share their thoughts and perform some of their literary works for you. They will be joined by a panel of Sisters community members whose poetry speaks to the humanity in us all. Help us fill the room at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 1126 SW Park Ave. Bring your friends and families, too! Journeys is a benefit event designed to bring folks together in a fun way, and raise funds to support Sisters programs and community. Of course, a Sisters event wouldn't be a Sisters event without food! There will be appetizers and music in the course of the evening.
Our featured guest panelist is the inspiring S. Renee Mitchell - creative visionary, social activist and commanding writer. Renee is an award-winning poet and author of 4 books, an artist and teacher whose projects have impacted communities from Portland to Africa. Renee has more than 25 years of journalism experience 10 of which were spent at The Oregonian writing a twice-weekly column about education, government, neighborhoods, race and culture. Her dynamic 2013 novel, "Tangoing With Tornadoes" changed my life when I read it, and is also a heart-thumping play. Read more about her at: www.reneemitchellspeaks.com.
Our other guest panelists include: Ronault L. S. Catalani, aka "Polo", Emily Pittman Newberry, and Alberto Moreno.
Ronault L. S. Catalani: In his native Indonesian language, L.S. stands for: Latang (the sound the heart makes) and Sayang (song); together it means "compassion". That describes Polo to a "T"! Polo states, "Our family was expelled from Indonesia, granted asylum the Netherlands, then resettled in Oregon. I am a West Coast and SE Asian Civil Rights attorney, senior contributing editor of The Asian Reporter, and contributor to The Oregonian and Oregon Public Radio." He recently wrote the book "Counter Culture: Immigrant Stories from Portland Café Counters," became City Hall's New Portlander programs manager, and became a grandpa."
Emily Pittman Newberry was born and raised in the mid-west and upstate New York during the post-World War II boom. She worked in factories as a machinist, participated in political revolution, and 30 years later, became an organizational development consultant. After a long spiritual journey, she came into acceptance of herself as a transgendered woman. Despite experiencing discrimination, she followed her heart and became a published poet. Today, she writes and performs poetry about the human condition. Her first book, "Butterfly A Rose", was published in 2010. There have been two other collaborative books since then. Alberto Moreno is executive director of the Oregon Latino Health Coalition, chair for the Commission on Hispanic Affairs, attends the American Leadership Forum to speak out on migrant farm workers health rights, and much more. Alberto is an elegant poet who sat on the Oregon State Poet Laureate committee, and gave the inaugural welcome for the Governor in January 2015. Here is a phrase from the poem he included at the end of his powerful speech:
"Before the sun rises,
before the sun rises
before the stories of separateness
can assert their veil over our opened eyes,
before all these stories
have a chance to talk and chatter
I can see, I can see the thread of all things..."
